While pathogenesis takes a reactive approach to treating what’s wrong in the body, salutogenesis takes a proactive approach to adopting health-promoting behaviours. It assumes the premise that wellness is something that should be actively pursued and put effort into. The medical sociologist Aron Antonovsky (1979) proposed an approach termed ‘salutogenesis,’ a theory of how and why certain people stay healthy. What is interesting about this approach is that it does not postulate a sense of control as a primary or even necessary characteristic of a healthy personality.

In order to reach these objectives, it looks at and acts upon the broad range of factors and conditions that have a strong influence on our health. Behaviorism emphasizes the role of environmental factors in influencing behavior, to the near exclusion of innate or inherited factors. This amounts essentially to a focus on learning.

Salutogenesis is a term coined by Aaron Antonovsky, a professor of medical sociology and is derived from a mix of Greek and Latin that roughly translates to “health origins” and describes an approach focusing on factors that support human healthand well-being, rather than on factors that cause disease. The editor of the journal has taken the initiative to develop glossaries on central concepts in health promotion.

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne was designed with a clear intent: to create a physical environment that can assist with recovery and good health. As stated in section “Salutogenesis and the Sense of Coherence” on key concepts there are many similarities between the HPS approach and the salutogenic orientation. In this section, a few major interventions related to the HPS approach are presented and discussed with a specific focus on the salutogenic orientation. This approach is widely used around the world – in health, education, workplaces, architectural design – and we believe it has enormous relevance in dementia care.

Salutogenesis is an approach that emphasizes

In salutogenesis, the emphasis rests with the person's ability to utilize resistance resources, both internal and external, to manage ubiquitous stressful situations [3]. Salutogenesis, the origin of health, is a stress resource orientated concept, which focuses on resources, maintains and improves the movement towards health. It gives the answer why people despite stressful situations and hardships stay well. The theory can be applied at an individual, a group, and a societal level.

The concept of salutogenesis [5,6] as an opposite of pathogenesis is based on the presence of internal (intrapersonal) and external (social and societal) general resistance resources (GRR), which are necessary for coping with a range of physical and psychosocial stressors. Salutogenesis has been applied to guide health promotion research and practice in various settings.
